The “experimental” aspect is twofold. The first is the school’s governance: it is run by the teachers themselves, who elect their director and assistant director. On my visit, the director was Valérie Guindé, a German teacher. There’s a weekly meeting with all the teachers. This idea of self-management was fashionable at the time the school was founded; the Lycée autogéré de Paris and the Lycée experimental de Saint-Nazaire both date from the same epoch and have a similar governance structure.
